The Wild Swans (Дикие лебеди Dikie lebedi) is a 1962 Soviet animated film adapted from the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, directed by Mikhail and Vera Tsekhanovsky.

Synopsis The lives of Princess Elisa and her eleven brothers are changed forever when their father weds a beautiful but wicked woman. Possessing the power of witchcraft, she curses the children, turning the boys into swans and altering Elisa's appearance so her own father will not recognize her. Undeterred, Elisa never gives up hope that she will be reunited with her brothers once more and seeks a way to restore them to their original forms.

Dubbing History

The first English dub came in 1964, produced by a company called EM Films. The majority of the cast of the dub is unknown.

The second English dub was produced by Jim Terry in the 1980s, using his regular voice actors, and was released on the Just for Kids VHS label.

The third English dub was produced as part of the Stories from My Childhood series in the 1990s. This one had celebrity voices in a number of the main roles and was dubbed in Vancouver.

Notes

• In the original Russian version of the film and the Jim Terry dub, the narrator was a separate character from the rest of the cast. In the EM Films and Jove dubs, the crow is the narrator instead, with both versions using recycled footage of the character introducing the story at the start.
• The crow is a male in the EM Films and Jim Terry dubs, but is a female in the Jove dub.
