Arrietty, titled The Borrower Arrietty (借りぐらしのアリエッティ Kari-gurashi no Arietti) in Japan and The Secret World of Arrietty in North America, is a 2010 Japanese animated fantasy film by Studio Ghibli, based on Mary Norton's juvenile fantasy novel, The Borrowers. The film was directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, and written by Hayao Miyazaki and Keiko Niwa.

Synopsis

Sho moves into his great aunt's house and soon discovers the presence of tiny people, the Borrowers, living there. A 14-year-old Borrower named Arrietty strives to prove herself by helping her father gather materials that her family needs from Sho's new home. However, Arrietty and Sho meet, breaking the rule that humans must not know about the Borrowers' existence. As Sho and Arrietty's relationship develops, human interference endangers the Borrowers' lives. Arrietty and Sho work together to try and protect the Borrowers' way of life.

Dubbing History[]

Two different English dubs were produced for Arrietty. The first dub was produced by Optimum Releasing for a U.K. release, and released July 29, 2011. Why Optimum chose to produce their own dub is unclear, though it's believed that Optimum wanted to release the film in the UK before Disney's American dub was ready. It may also be due to Arrietty being based on an English novel. This version of the dub is also released in Australia.

Disney's dub would be released to theaters on February 17, 2012, under the title The Secret World of Arrietty. The North American dub was directed by Gary Rydstrom, produced by Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy and written by Karey Kirkpatrick. The names of the humans were westernized in the Disney dub.

Notes[]

  • The first Studio Ghibli film to have two different English dubs since Porco Rosso.
  • While GKIDS attempted to get the licensing for the UK dub to release for their 2017 re-release of the film on Blu-Ray and DVD, they were ultimately unable to negotiate the rights.
