The Rose of Versailles (ベルサイユのばら, Berusaiyu no Bara) is a 2025 Japanese animated romance film produced by MAPPA and distributed by Toho Next and Avex Pictures, based on the 1972 manga by Riyoko Ikeda.

The film was released in Japan on January 31, 2025, and was released internationally on Netflix on April 30, 2025.

Synopsis At the end of the 18th century, young Marie Antoinette of Austria arrives in Versailles, France, as a pawn in a political game during the darkest days of the French Empire—unaware that her fate will intertwine with Oscar, a captain raised as a man in the most dangerous court in Europe. Surrounded by secrets, passion, and the looming shadow of revolution, the two women navigate the roles life has forced upon them as best they can... while facing an impossible love, hidden ties from the past, and a rebellion growing stronger by the day. Can their bond and loyalty withstand the crumbling world around them?

Notes

• This is the first production of The Rose of Versailles franchise to feature an English dub.
• The English dub was the only one where all the musical segments were dubbed. In contrast, in the other international dubs, all the musical segments were kept in their original Japanese, with forced subtitles provided by Netflix.
