The Hallo Spencer Show

The Hallo Spencer Show (Hallo Spencer) is a German puppet show that ran from 1979 to 2001 on the NDR network. In 1989, Saban Entertainment selected 100 episodes, cut them to 22 minutes and dubbed them, though the dub did not show up on American TV until 1992.

In 2007, the series received a 2nd English dub produced by PentaTV. This dub is a more faithful adaptation of the original German version. Two episodes of the dub were included as bonus features on the 1st German DVD box set.

Spencer's first name in the US broadcasts, Hallo, simply means "hello" in German, so the show's original German title Hallo, Spencer is Hello, Spencer in English. There is a sign hanging on the back wall of Spencer's studio displaying the German title and US distributors thought it would be necessary to have an English explanation to that – thus Hallo or Hello in English became Spencer's first name in the US.
In a promotional flyer for the Saban dub, a few different dub names were shown for the characters. Poldi's name was originally going to be changed to Danny. Nepomuk was going to be called Grumpo the Grouch and Elvis was going to be called Elmo. Elvis and Lulu were originally going to be portrayed as a married couple in the Saban dub.^[1] There is no indication of Elvis and Lulu being married in the final product.
