The Good, the Bad & the Ugly (Il Buono, Il Brutto, Il Cattivo) is an Italian epic Spaghetti western film directed by Sergio Leone, starring Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef, and Eli Wallach in the title roles respectively. It is the third and final installment in the "Dollars Trilogy", following A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More.

The screenplay was written by Age & Scarpelli, Luciano Vincenzoni and Leone, based on a story by Vincenzoni and Leone. The film was a co-production between companies in Italy, Spain and West Germany. It was released on December 23, 1966 in Italy, and on December 29, 1967 in the U.S. The film is now seen as one of the greatest and most influential Westerns of all time.

Synopsis

During the American Civil War, three men set off to find $200,000 in buried gold coins. Tuco and Blondie have known each other for some time now having used the reward on Tuco's head as a way of earning money. They come across a dying man, Bill Carson, who tells them of a treasure in gold coins. By chance, he tells Tuco the name of the cemetery and tells Blondie the name of the grave where the gold is buried. Now rivals, the two men have good reason to keep each other alive. The third man, Angel Eyes, hears of the gold stash from someone he's been hired to kill. All he knows is to look for for someone named Bill Carson. The three ultimately meet in a showdown that takes place amid a major battle between Confederate and Union forces.

Dubbing History[]

Like most Sergio Leone films, The Good, the Bad, & the Ugly technically had no original language. Rather, the mixed international cast (Americans, Italians, and Spanish) performed their parts in their own languages and were subsequently dubbed. The film was shot silently, so even English speaking had to be dubbed. It is known that the three main cast members (Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach) provided their own dubbing, though the majority of the voice cast are unknown and subject to speculation.

The 2003 extended edition re-incorporated previously untranslated or lost footage, but due to being shot silently the voice tracks had to be recreated. Clint Eastwood and Eli Wallach provided most of their own re-dubbing, with others voice matching certain scenes and other characters. As Lee Van Cleef had passed away in 1989, Simon Prescott dubs his voice in the additional scenes.
