Yak: The Giant King (ยักษ์, Yak) (released as The Robot Giant in some countries and The Giant King in the U.S. and Australia) is a 2012 Thai 3D computer-animated comic science fiction children's/family film directed by Prapas Cholsaranont and Chaiporn Panichrutiwong and distributed by Workpoint Picture.

Synopsis

A re-interpretation of Ramayana, the Thai animation film tells the story of a giant robot, Na Kiew, who's left wandering in a barren wasteland after a great war. Na Kiew meets Jao Phuek, a puny tin robot who's lost his memory and is now stuck with his new big friend. Together they set out across the desert populated by metal scavengers, to look for Ram, the creator of all robots.

Dubbing History[]

The film was originally dubbed into English in its home country of Thailand alongside the original Thai version. Todd Lavelle contributed a lot for the dub, such as lending his voice to many characters including one of the main protagonists, directing the voice actors, translating all the songs and even singing most of them himself. This dub is featured on the Thai Blu-ray to the film and was also released to theaters in Malaysia and straight-to-DVD in the UK and Australia.

In 2015, the film was dubbed a second time, this time using a few all star actors such as comedian Russell Peters, actress Bella Thorne, English actor Gregg Sulkin, and singer Carlos PenaVega. This dub was produced by Lionsgate via Grindstone Entertainment Group and Simka Entertainment. Like a lot of Grindstone dubs, this dub features tons of additional background chatter, pop culture references, and a few pop songs which weren't present in the original. The dub also features changes to the story, with all the references to Ramayana removed, along with changing some of the character names, personalities, and even some of the genders of characters.
