The Eminence in Shadow is an anime series based off the light novel series of the same name written by Daisuke Aizawa and illustrated by Tōzai. It was published by Enterbrain on November 5, 2018. The original web novel of the series was published by Shōsetsuka ni Narō in May of 2018. The manga version of the series was illustrated by Anri Sakano, and it was serialized and published in Kadokawa Shoten's Comp Ace magazine on December 26, 2018.

The anime series was announced on the release of the fourth light novel volume on February 26, 2021. It was overall animated by Nexus, directed by Kazuya Nakanishi, series composition by Kanichi Katou, composed by Kenichiro Suehiro, and it premiered the first season in Japan from October 5, 2022 to February 15, 2023, consisting of 20 episodes. The second season was announced during a livestream on February 22, 2023. The main staff returned for the second season, and it premiered from October 4, 2023 to December 20, 2023, consisting of 12 episodes. An anime film of the series was announced on December 20, 2023, and is currently in development.

Sentai Filmworks licensed and produced an English Dub, which premiered on HIDIVE's streaming service on December 26, 2022. The second season's dub premiered as a World Premiere at Anime Expo on July 4, 2023, and it ran as a simuldub on HIDIVE, which premiered on the same day as the anime's release on October 4, 2023.

Synopsis “The Eminence in Shadow.” Not the main character, and not the last boss. The one who lurks in the shadows of the storyline and holds all the power, hiding his true abilities by acting like a side character. The boy who longs to be a 'Shadowbroker' lives an unobtrusive life as a side character, training to gain magic power until he's killed in an accident and reincarnated into another world. Reborn as Cid Kagenou, the boy decides to enjoy himself in this other world with a made-up scenario about "the Eminence in Shadow." He starts fooling around with secret maneuvers against an evil cult that he born from his imagination... and it turns out that the cult really does exist! The girls he took on as his subordinates on a whim began worshiping Cid as Shadow, and before he knows it, Cid has become a true "Eminence in Shadow." Before long, Cid—along with his mysterious group the Shadow Garden—will destroy the darkness of his new world.
