Tenchi Muyo! (天地無用! Tenchi Muyō!, lit. "Tenchi Useless!") is a popular anime series based on the manga created by Masaki Kajishima and Hiroki Hayashi.

This is a list of the entries in the classic OVA series. The various series were dubbed and released by Pioneer Entertainment from 1993 to 1999.

Tenchi Muyo![]

The original series began with a series of 6 OVA's titled Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki (天地 無用! 魎 皇 鬼) released in Japan on September 25, 1992.

Synopsis

Tenchi Masaki was a normal 17-year-old boy until the day he accidentally releases the space pirate, Ryoko, from a cave she was sealed in 700 years ago as the people thought she was a demon. In a series of events, four other alien girls show up at the Masaki household as Tenchi learns much of his heritage he never knew about and deal with five alien girls who each have some sort of romantic interest in him.

The second entry in the series, Tenchi Muyo! The Night Before the Carnival (天地無用!魎皇鬼スペシャル 番外編「お祭り前日の夜!Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki: Omatsuri Zenjitsu no Yoru!) was released on September 25, 1993 and is generally counted as the 7th episode.

Synopsis

A few days after Kagato is defeated everything returns to normal. Ryoko finds Mihoshi and Sasami reading shojo manga which Sasami tells that they are guides to tell how to win a boy Earth style. So Ryoko decides to try to use ideas from manga to win Tenchi. Ayeka finds out what she's doing and starts using the manga to win Tenchi as well.

The second special titled Tenchi Muyo! Mihoshi Special (天地無用!番外編 宇宙刑事美星 銀河大冒険 Tenchi Muyo! Uchū Keiji Mihoshi Ginga Daibōken) was released on March 25, 1994.

Synopsis

Mihoshi tells a story of her most famous mission with the Galaxy Police and casts all of the Tenchi Muyo characters, against their will, in it.

Tenchi Muyo! II[]

The second series of OVA's consisted to 6 episodes directed by Kenichi Yatani and was released on September 25, 1994. They are considered episodes 8-13 of the series.

Synopsis

This OVA series gives the viewer more in-depth details on Sasami, Washu, and Ryo-ohke, as well as introducing members of the Juraian royal family.

Tenchi Universe[]

A 26-episode anime series titled Tenchi Universe (天地無用!宇宙篇) premiered on Japanese TV on April 2, 1995. It is an alternate story to the OVA's and the backstory of several characters is changed.

Synopsis

Tenchi Masaki may be a 17-year-old young man in rural Japan, but little does he know how bad his day will be getting. When a space pirate chased by a pair of Galaxy Police officers crash-lands at his grandfather's temple, Tenchi is sucked into a new adventure that will literally blast him off into outer space and beyond.

Tenchi in Tokyo (新・天地無用!) is another alternate story consisting of 26-episodes that premiered in Japan on April 1, 1997.

Synopsis

Tenchi decides to move to Tokyo in order to lead a normal life in the big city. While in Tokyo Tenchi meets a girl named Sakuyo. They soon fall in love but as it turns out a dark sinister force has created Sakuyo to get at Tenchi and rule the earth. Now Tenchi must balance love, friends, and life while defending the earth one last time.
