Slam Dunk (スラム ダンク Suramu Danku) is an anime series based on the manga by Takehiko Inoue, originally broadcasting from October 16, 1993 to March 23, 1996 with 101 episodes.

Synopsis

Sakuragi Hanamichi is a junior high punk used to getting into fights and being rejected by girls but upon entering high school he meets the girl of his dreams, Haruko Akagi. He will do anything in order to win her heart including joining the school basketball team that is aiming to conquer the nation lead by Haruko's brother. The problem is that Sakuragi has never played basketball before and a freshman sensation is stealing the spotlight and Haruko's affection from him.

Dubbing History[]

The series was dubbed in Toronto, Canada and released by Toei Animation through Geneon Entertainment on DVD from March 15 to June 14, 2005. The DVD releases were cancelled after 4 volumes, only going up to Episode 20. The first 14 episodes (Season 1) of this dub are often made available on streaming services.

Based on various sources, the episodes released do not represent all that were dubbed. Slam Dunk received a Canadian Content credit, indicating that the series was likely intended for broadcast from the beginning, possibly to completion in anticipation of a TV deal. Various Toronto-based actors have listed roles for Slam Dunk characters that appear after Episode 20. Actor Jay T. Schramek had previously listed having voiced Shoichi Takano on his resume, a character who appears after Episode 20. Actor Daveed Louza lists having voiced Aota on his resume (a role played by Robert Norman Smith in the released episodes, possibly being replacing later on due to his arrest) and Rob Kirkpatrick as the voice director (the released episodes were directed by Dan Hennessey).[1] Toronto-based casting manager Joanne Boreham lists Slam Dunk on her resume for 60 episodes, making it extremely likely that this is where the series dub went up to.[2] However, Jay T. Schramek claims that more than 100 episodes of the series were recorded.[3]

An alternate dub was produced by Animax Asia for broadcast on their channel in Southeast Asia. This dub was also incomplete, going only slightly longer, up to Episode 83.
