Richard McNamara (September 5, 1915 – August 1, 1998) was an American voice actor and voice director.

Career[]

Richard McNamara was born on September 5, 1915, in the USA. After moving to Italy in the 1950s, he soon began working in films and, more prominently, dubbing them. He was one of the pioneers of English dubbing in Rome, building up the industry together with the prominent voice actors and directors Anthony La Penna, Lewis E. Ciannelli, George Higgins III, Valentino Bruchi and Gisella Mathews, among others.[1]

During the early years, there were no universal workers union for Roman English-language dubbers, but several different organizations competing with one another, contracting voice actors to work exclusively for them. One such group was led by McNamara, among his pool of talent were Charles Borromel, Cicely Browne, Curt Lowens, Robert Sommer, John Stacy and Dan Sturkie. In the mid-1960s, an effort headed by Tony Russell led to unity among the different dubbing groups, coming together under the banner of ELDA (English Language Dubbers Association), which McNamara accepted rather begrudgingly, as he had been successfully securing most dubbing jobs for his group.[1]

McNamara worked in dubbing for the rest of his life. He is perhaps most notably remembered as the first English standard voice of Bud Spencer before being gradually replaced by Edward Mannix in the 1980s.
