Alexander Senki (アレクサンダー戦記 Arekusandā Senki), released in North America as Reign: The Conqueror, is a Korean-Japanese anime series based on the homonymous light novel written by Hiroshi Aramata. The series is a re-imagining of the life of Macedonian conqueror and emperor Alexander the Great. The character designs for the anime were done by Æon Flux creator Peter Chung. It premiered in Japan on September 14, 1999 on WOWOW, with a duration of 13 episodes.

Synopsis

Prince Alexander, son of King Philip, and heir to the Macedonian empire, must fend off political sabotuers, assassins, and the jealousy of his own father to ascend to the position of king. Once there, he begins his quest to conquer all nations and become known as the Great King, though an ancient prophecy fortells that he will be the destroyer of the world and forever remembered as the Devil King.

Dubbing History[]

In the original attempt at American distribution, the producers created a dub under the direction of veteran voice director Jack Fletcher. Only the first 4 episodes were dubbed before the project was dropped. These 4 dubbed episodes would also be merged together into a compilation film and released on DVD in South Korea.[1]

When the anime was picked up by Tokyopop and prepared for its 2003 release as Reign: The Conqueror, another dub was created. Still, Tokyopop retained the rights to the first four episodes of the series containing Fletcher's original dub and used them for the first four episodes of the American release. It used the second dub for the remaining episodes. The lone voice actor to reprise their roles was John DeMita, who also took on the main role of Alexander.

Notes[]

  • The dub cast for the first 4 episodes contains much of the same cast as the MTV Series Æon Flux, which was created by Peter Chung, who worked as character and setting designer for Reign: The Conqueror. Jack Fletcher was also the voice director for the series.
  • A compilation film consisting of mostly recut footage from the first 10 episodes was released theatrically in Japan in 2000 under the title Alexander: The Movie. The film would however not be dubbed into English. There was a misconception believing that a dubbed version of the film containing the first dub cast was available on a South Korean DVD, however this turned out to be a separate compilation film of the first four episodes.
