Dubbing Wikia

Area 88 is a three episode OVA series based on the manga series with the same name written and illustrated by Kaoru Shintani. The anime was directed by Hisayuki Toriumi and animated by Studio Pierrot. It was released between February 5, 1985 to August 15, 1986. Central Park Media licensed the OVA, but only dubbed the first two OVA episodes in the 90's on VHS. They later released the first OVA on DVD in 1999. Both episodes had two different cast, due to CPM dubbing the first OVA in 1996 and the second OVA later in 1999. Following their release of the TV series, ADV Films later licensed the OVAs, including the third episode (which was never released) and dubbed them with the cast of the TV series in 2006. ADV's release featured a cut that combined the first two episodes into one film. Discotek Media re-released the OVA series in 2018, with both dubs of episode 1.

Area 88: Act I - The Blue Skies of Betrayal[]

Synopsis

Somewhere in the Middle East, the Kingdom of Asran is rocked by Civil war. On the front of the battle lies an airbase for a mercenary air force, with pilots from many nations and walks of life. It's a burning, sandy hellhole which has no name, only a designation: Area 88.

Shin Kazama is a pilot at Area 88. The mercenaries there have come for many reasons—some by choice, and some against their wills. For all, Area 88 has become the focus of their lives. Shin is haunted by memories of his days as a pilot trainee with Yamato Airways...and the night that his friend and fellow trainee, Kanzaki, tricked him into signing a contract inducting him into the Asran Mercenary Air Force. Now Shin is out of the picture, leaving Kanzaki with one less obstacle between him and Royko, Shin's girlfriend.

As a fighter pilot at Area 88, Shin must learn to kill for pay. There are only three ways to leave the Mercenary Air Force: to serve for three years, pay a 1.5 million dollar penalty, or...desertion. As he flies to earn money to buy his freedom, Shin realizes that killing is becoming easier and easier for him to do. And now the question is no longer whether Shin can survive and return home; it has become whether he can keep his soul from being consumed by the fires of Asran's war.

Synopsis

After being shot down in what was to be in his final battle, Shin Kazama begins to seriously contemplate going AWOL when three escaped killers confront him. Rescued by his comrades, Shin opts to safeguard the bond with his squadron and abandons his plan

Back in Japan, Ryoko remains steadfast as her father pleads with her to accept Kanzaki's marriage proposal. Meanwhile, Kanzaki is busy making shady deals to buy large quantities of Yamato Airlines' stock. By chance, Ryoko learns that Shin is still alive, and moves to find out exactly where he is. This further enrages Kanzaki, who hired a professional killer to eliminate Shin once and for all!

A further twist of fate brings Ryoko, Kanzaki and Area 88 commander Saki Vashutal together on a passenger jet flying to the Middle East. Saki has been target for assassination by Asran's anti-government forces, and bombs have been set on the plane to ensure his elimination. Their only chance: Shin Kazama and Mick Simon!

As Shin and Mick race to save the plane, a team of professional mercenaries is moving into their region. Their ultimate target--Area 88! Shin and his comrades are about to meet their match over the skies of the Middle East...but this time Shin has to watch his back as well!

Area 88: Act III - Burning Mirage[]

Synopsis

Like a phoenix, Shin Kazama is back at the controls of his F-20 Tiger Shark. During the battle, a pilot in his squadron is blinded by shrapnel and, panic-stricken and unable to eject from his plane, begins to fire blindly. Shin is forced to kill the man, rather than let him risk the lives of the rest of the squadron.

While Shin ponders when it was that he grew accustomed to killing the enemy, Kanzaki, now president of Yamato Airlines, has brought the company to the brink of financial ruin with his purchase of cheap, defective jets.

Ryoko decides to sell her airline stock to raise money to buy Shin's freedom from the Asran military. Finding the market unfavorable, she resigns herself to seeking help from her adversarial suitor, Kanzaki, but his terms are more than she can bear!

Will Kanzaki's blunderous business ethics lead him to eventual disaster? Can Ryoko resist his offer to free Shin...for the price of one evening together? As the possibility of the Asran government losing the war becomes reality, the tension at Area 88 builds to a climax. The final air battle erupts as Act III approaches its shocking conclusion!
