Land of the Lustrous (宝石の国 Hōseki no Kuni) is a 2017 anime series based on the manga with the same name written and illustrated by Haruko Ichikawa. It was serialized and published in Kodansha's Monthly Afternoon magazine from October 25, 2012 to April 25, 2024, with a total of 12 volumes.
The anime series was animated by studio Orange, directed and written by Takahiko Kyōgoku and Toshiya Ōno, and it premiered in Japan from October 7, 2017 to December 23, 2017, consisting of 12 episodes. Sentai Filmworks licensed the anime and streamed the series on Anime Strike and HIDIVE. Anime Strike at the time had the streaming rights for the series in the U.S. and Canada, while HIDIVE streamed Internationally such as United Kingdom, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, before being streamed in the U.S. and Canada on June 17, 2018. Later on, Sentai Filmworks produced an English Dub for the series, which was released on the Blu-Ray release on January 22, 2019.
Synopsis
In a world inhabited by crystalline lifeforms called The Lustrous, every unique gem must fight for their way of life against the threat of lunarians who would turn them into decorations. Phosphophyllite, the most fragile and brittle of gems, longs to join the battle. When Phos is instead assigned to complete a natural history of their world, it sounds like a dull and pointless task. But this new job brings Phos into contact with Cinnabar, a gem forced to live in isolation.
