InuYasha (戦国御伽草子 犬夜叉 Sengoku Otogizōshi Inuyasha) is an anime based on the manga written by Rumiko Takahashi, and produced by Shōgakukan, Yomiuri TV and Sunrise Inc. It originally aired in Japan from October 16, 2000 until September 13, 2004, consisting of 167 episodes.

It would later be followed up with a sequel series InuYasha: The Final Act, which aired from October 3, 2009 to March 29, 2010, with 26 episodes.

Synopsis

Kagome Higurashi is a 15 year old schoolgirl who lives at a history-filled Japanese shrine. She is also the reincarnation of an ancient priestess named Kikyo, who guarded the sacred Shikon no Tama (Jewel of Four Souls), and who sealed away the half-demon Inuyasha who had tried to steal the jewel in order to become a full demon. Kikyo died of her wounds and had the jewel burned with her body. One day, after being pulled down a well by a demon, Kagome finds herself in the Sengoku period of feudal Japan. She befriends Kaede, the late Kikyo's sister, who realizes Kagome is Kikyo's reincarnation. After being attacked, they learn that Kagome has the Shikon no Tama inside her body. Kagome accidentally awakens the dog-demon Inuyasha, and frees him after the jewel has been ripped from her body. Now Inuyasha wants the jewel back, but Kagome can't let him have it. He is forced (by Kaede's magic) to wear a necklace that allows Kagome to control him with one word, "Sit!", which sends him face-first into the ground.

After the jewel shatters in an attempt to retrieve it from one of the many demons who was after its power, Kagome must join forces with InuYasha to track down the shards of the jewel before its power falls into the wrong hands. Only Kagome can "sense" where the shards are, and only Inuyasha is powerful enough to get them from the demons or people who have them. But can they stop fighting long enough to work together?

Dubbing History[]

The series was dubbed by the Canadian dubbing company Ocean Productions for Viz Media from 2002 to 2006. The series was first run on Adult Swim in the United States (although it had originally been planned for Cartoon Network's Toonami) from August 31, 2002 to October 27, 2006, with reruns from 2006 to 2014. When Toonami became a block on Adult Swim, Inuyasha aired there from November 2012 to March 1, 2014, when the network announced that they had lost the broadcast rights to the series.

At some point, an alternative dub was done for Animax using their Hong Kong-based cast.

Notes[]

  • Both of InuYasha's English dub voice actors, Richard Ian Cox and Darren Pleavin, also previously voiced the title character originally voiced by Kappei Yamaguchi in another Rumiko Takahashi work; Ranma ½.
  • Mark Gibbon is mistakenly credited as the voice of Kyokotsu in the Ocean Group dub when in fact Dave Ward voiced the character. The credits were later changed to reflect this for the DVD releases.
