Hulu is an American subscription streaming service owned by Disney Streaming, a subsidiary of the Disney Entertainment segment of the Walt Disney Company based in Los Angeles, California. It was launched on October 29, 2007, initially as a joint venture between News Corporation (later 21st Century Fox) and NBC Universal, which was later bought by Comcast.
History[]
Hulu was announced in March 2007 with AOL, NBCUniversal (then co-owned by General Electric and Vivendi), MSN, Myspace (then owned by News Corporation), and Yahoo! planned as "initial distribution partners." Jason Kilar was named Hulu CEO in late 2007. The name Hulu was chosen in late August 2007, when the website went live with an announcement only and no content.
Disney acquisition[]
Brian L. Roberts (Comcast CEO) announced on September 6, 2023 that Hulu's equity fair value will be assessed as of September 30. Disney acquired 21st century Fox on March 20, 2019, giving it a 60% major stake in Hulu.
In November 2023, Disney began their acquisition of Comcast's stake in Hulu. On December 6, 2023, Disney launched a content hub for Disney+, which contains Hulu content for Disney Bundle subscribers in the United States in beta. The Disney+ hub officially launched in March 2024; Hulu also continued to be available through its own app. In the summer of 2024, Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery, which was formed in 2022 after AT&T merged WarnerMedia with Discovery, Inc., announced a streaming bundle that allows access to Disney+, Hulu, and Max (the former HBO Max), but not ESPN+.
