Geneon Entertainment (USA) Inc. was the North American branch of anime producer Geneon Entertainment. The company began as Pioneer Entertainment, who began releasing anime in 1993. In 2003, the company was sold to Dentsu and changed their name to Geneon. Geneon was one of the largest anime distributors, along with ADV Films, Bandai Entertainment, FUNimation Entertainment and Viz Media. Geneon USA would later close their doors on September 28, 2007.
History[]
Founded in 1987 as Pioneer LDCA Inc., the North American branch of Pioneer LDC. (a division of Pioneer Electronics), the company distributed films from movie studios such as Paramount, Disney and MGM on Laserdisc format. In 1993, they began releasing anime, starting with Tenchi Muyo!. From the mid to late 90's, the company transitioned from selling laserdiscs to distributing anime titles and changed their name to Pioneer Entertainment (USA) L.P. Pioneer also handled distribution for other anime companies such as Viz Media and Bandai Entertainment.
In 2003, Pioneer Electronics sold their entertainment divisions to Japanese media conglomerate Dentsu. Dentsu changed both Pioneer LDC and Pioneer Entertainment to Geneon Entertainment. Geneon is a portmanteau of generate and eon. In 2005, Geneon became the distributor for Toei Animation. In 2007, they signed a two-year agreement to distribute titles for Bandai Visual USA.
On August 29, 2007, Geneon and ADV Films announced a strategic alliance deal where ADV would take over sales and distribution for Geneon's catalog, which would've commenced on October 1. Geneon had laid off their entire marketing and sales team in preparation for the deal. However, less than a month later, the deal was canceled. On September 28, 2007, Geneon announced that they would cease in-house sales and distribution for their catalog. On July 3, 2008, FUNimation Entertainment announced their deal to distribute select Geneon titles to home video. Other Geneon titles have since been rescued from other anime companies such as Discotek Media, Media Blasters, and Sentai Filmworks.
