Conflagration (東京湾炎上, Tôkyô-wan enjô; lit Tokyo Bay Burns), a.k.a. The Explosion, is a 1975 Japanese action-adventure film produced by Toho. The film was directed by Katsumune Ishida and written by Toshio Masuda, Mitsuji Tanaka, and Yasuko Ôno.

Synopsis

Terrorists hijack an oil tanker and threaten to blow it up unless Japan meets their demands.

Dubbing History[]

Two English dubs would be produced for the film. The first dub was produced in Hong Kong in 1975 under the direction of Matthew Oram. This version would be released in most international markets under the title Conflagration.

In 1977, a second English-dubbed version would be produced in the US by Cinema Producers Alliance, Inc. and Pine-Thomas Productions. This version was released under the title High Seas Hijack. Numerous edits were made to the film, namely the removal of scenes featuring Jiro's love interest Michiko, along with the inclusion of new footage filmed by Pine-Thomas Productions with American actors such as Peter Graves and Gigi Perreau. Under the supervision-writing duties of Riley Jackson (billed in the ending titles as "Reilly Jackson"), the English dubbing featured veteran voice artist Marvin Miller in the role of the lead antagonist Simba and as several bit parts.

After it was acquired by Henry G. Saperstein's United Productions of America by 1980, High Seas Hijack received play through broadcast syndication during the early-to-mid 1980s, and later on AMC during the early 2000s, home video releases of either dubs aren't known to exist in the US or most English-speaking territories, however VHS releases of the two dubs are known to have been distributed in Sweden and the Netherlands respectively. Both releases feature cuts for violence, those for the international dub being local censorship, and those for the US dub having already been done for television.

Notes[]

  • Willie Dorsey's on-set performance as Seajacker Zamba was retained in the Cinema dub.
    • Interjections during the scuffles between the seajackers and the crew of the Arabian Light were also reused from the Japanese track, something of a trademark in dubs for which Riley Jackson was involved.
