Dubbing Wikia

Choppy & the Princess, (リボンの騎士 Ribbon No Kishi, lit. Knight of the Ribbons) also known as Princess Knight, is an anime series, based on the manga by Osamu Tezuka. It aired on Japan's Fuji Television from April 2, 1967 to April 7, 1968.

Synopsis

Princess Sapphire is a princess who was born with a boy's mind and raised as one because of one mischievous angel's mistake. Nevertheless, there is no way a girl can take the throne so her parents and the maid that helped raised her kept it a secret from everyone. Now as a Knight of Ribbon she has to fight to avoid having her identity revealed that Sapphire is a girl.

Dubbing History[]

Mushi Production submitted the anime adaptation to NBC Enterprises and was declined because its executives felt the series theme could be interpreted as "sex switch." Animator Joe Oriolo (best known as the creator of the 1950's Felix the Cat TV Series) would later purchase the anime's distribution rights, and along with Burt Hecht commissioned an English dub from the Tokyo-based dubbing company Frontier Enterprises.

In 1972, after a limited release under the title Princess Knight, three episodes edited into a film titled Choppy and the Princess that was licensed to independent television in the United States and was syndicated in the 1970s and 1980s. Unfortunately, the business arrangement between Joe Oriolo and Burt Hecht fell apart, and as part of the settlement, the partner departed with the Princess Knight masters. Somehow some copies ended up in Australia and Princess Knight was aired on The Seven Network.

Streamline Pictures planned to release the dub on VHS, but Orion put the kibosh on that, and the complete series would not see a home video release until 2006.
