Captain Harlock and the Queen of a Thousand Years is a 1985 Harmony Gold production combining Space Pirate Captain Harlock (宇宙海賊キャプテンハーロック Uchū Kaizoku Captain Harlock) and Queen Millennia (新竹取物語 1000年女王 Shin Taketori Monogatari: Sennen Joō). The dub was released to syndication in 1986 but did not prove popular and quickly fell into obscurity.
Dubbing History[]
According to Carl Macek, in the wake of Robotech a Harmony Gold executive asked him what shows he liked. He replied he liked Captain Harlock, and a few weeks later he was told 65 episodes of that show had been sold to twelve stations. However, there were only 41 episodes of Harlock and Toei was asking too high a price for the sequel show, so they decided to buy Queen Millennia instead and combine the two shows into one.
This proved to be a problem, and since there were only two days to write each episode, the show ended up a confusing mishmash. Both shows were supposed to be happening concurrently, yet the two casts never interacted, despite the narrator claiming they did. There were about as many episodes of Millennia as there were of Harlock, yet while the Harlock part of the show finished its arc at the end, the Millennia part was left as a cliffhanger. Certain characters were removed entirely and continuity often changed from one script to another and even over minutes.
The show was released to syndication in 1986 but did not prove very popular. Over time it fell into obscurity and is barely remembered today.
