Battle Royale is a 2000 Japanese action-thriller film directed by Kinji Fukasaku, with a screenplay written by Kenta Fukasaku, based on the 1999 novel by Koushun Takami.

While the film was released in subtitled versions across a number of international markets, due to its controversial subject matter, it went unreleased in the United States for a over a decade.
