Anne Shirley (アン・シャーリー, An Shārī) is a 2025 Japanese anime television series based on the novel Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery.

The anime series was announced on November 20, 2024.^[1] It was produced by The Answer Studio, directed by Hiroshi Kawamata, music composed by Michiru Ōshima, and it premiered in Japan on April 5, 2025, with it scheduled to air 24 episodes.^[2]^[3]

Crunchyroll licensed and produced an English Dub of the series, which premiered on their streaming service on April 19, 2025.^[4]^[5]

Synopsis

Anne is an orphan who, after years of waiting, is finally adopted… by mistake. A mix-up brings her to Green Gables, where siblings Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert were expecting a strong boy to help with the farm. Instead, she arrives: a slender girl with peculiar fiery red hair and grey eyes in which storms, stories, and dreams yet to be discovered seem to dance. Moved by a compassion they didn’t know existed within them, the Cuthberts decide to give her a chance. But Anne is not just a homeless girl: she is a whirlwind of imagination, boldness, overflowing sensitivity, and inner fire. She can turn routine into poetry, challenge what’s expected, and reinvent what the world tells her a girl should be. Through mistakes, discoveries, and the painful yet illuminating journey into adolescence, Anne will learn that growing up also means rebuilding oneself, that being different is not a flaw, and that sometimes you must walk through the shadows to reach the light. Will Anne find a place where her restless soul can take root, or will destiny once again tear away what she desires most?
