The television series was a Japanese-German co-production between Nippon Animation, TV Osaka and Apollo Films. The television series consists of 52 episodes. however, only 26 made it to the United States.

The series was also dubbed into Hindi by the national film development board of India and telecast on Doordarshan in the early 1990s.
